Chungju, indicated by the old name of city, Jungwon, Center of the Nation, has been the one of the leading cities in Korean history. Chungju stretches 41.6km from east to west, and 61.1km north to south making the area of 983.99งด, being high in the west and low in the east. Though mountains cover 65% of the land and the farming area is only 18%, the agriculture is still the main business. As of November, 2008, Chungju has the population of 208,849 with 78,533 households.
Situated in inland mountainous areas, Chungju shows wide daily and yearly temperature ranges and considerable precipitation. It is hot in summer and cold in winter. Chungju has not been much damaged by wind because it is surrounded by high mountains. In the summer from June to September, Chungju receives 72% of the total annual precipitation, providing good conditions for farming and livestock raising. |

In addition, Chungju is famous for being the founding ground for Korean martial arts and holds an international martial arts festival every year. |
