Danyang county is located in the farthest northern area of North Chungcheong Province in the middle of the Korean Peninsula, neighboring three provinces: south of Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon Province, west of Punggi-eup, North Gyeongsang Province, north of Yecheon-gun and Mungyeong City, and east of Jecheon City. The county, through which the Nam Han River flows toward the ocean, has been widely well known for scenic beauties that reveal themselves along the Sobaik Mountain range, one of the mountain ranges that separate the eastern and western areas of the Korean Peninsula, covering an area of 780.1§´, and with its county office located at Byeolgongli, Danyang-eup.
Geographical areas are very widespread, with 83.7% consisting of mountainous areas, and yet only 11.2 % comprises cultivated areas, and the terrain is very rugged, except in some of the villages and urban areas that have been settled in the valleys and hills. The main water system ranges from the upper stream of the Nam Han River (23.7km long), which flows through the county to Lake re Pyeongchang River, one of the streams flowing off Mt. Odae, joins the several streams at Jungnyeong, Danyang, and Geumgok, originating from Mt. Sobaeksan. The Nam Han River, which has its source in Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon Province, flows through the county.
The county, which is situated in an inland mountainous area, epitomizes an inland climate with severe variations in temperatures. The annual average temperature reaches 11.1¡É, with the highest at 25.4¡É and the lowest at -2.3¡É, and its annual rainfall in 2006 averages 1,719.8mm.
The Central Expressway and Central Railroad head southward through the central part of this county, running parallel with a national road which connects with Yeongju, Jechon, Yeongwol, and Chungju, Jungnyeong, adjacent to the southeastern part of the area, and it is a strategic point in traffic.
It has a large deposit of limestone, raw material of cement. Danyang¡¯s vast mineral resources used to make a remarkable contribution to the national economic development. Hyundai Cement, Sungshin Cement, Hanil Cement, and many other cement -related companies are located in Danayng. |

| Danyang is a town of culture and tourism, situated against the backdrop of beautiful Mt. Sobaeksan, which is one of the sacred mountains on the Korean Peninsula. Danyang has a variety of famous attractions, including historic relics, eight prestigious scenic spots, fantastic lakes and rivers, and marvelous prehistoric caves. The Royal Azaleas Festival and the Full Moon Festival are held annually at Mt. Sobaeksan. |
